Dear Rotarians,

As we celebrate the winter holidays and our 97th year of being chartered as the Rotary Club of San Leandro, we still have challenges in the second half of the Rotary Year.

I look forward to the upcoming opportunities to provide grants through the Rotary Endowment Fund, to break bread and ring the bell, and organize fundraisers that support our club operations and local organizations. We are a small but mighty group but we need to focus on our recruitment to attract new members whose core value is service above self, like us.  I hope future presidents can embrace a goal of 100 members by 2026, our 100th year of Charter.

Looking back to the first half of the Rotary 2023-24 year, I have enjoyed bringing the Club together at our various meetings and gatherings, with the support of the Board and your involvement.  Given the need to prioritize our financial well-being, I hope that the fundraisers and upcoming opportunities to support the community with grants will continue to bolster our role in the San Leandro Community as Rotarians in Action.

We also recognize the loss of loved ones, Rotarians and their spouses, and our significant impact in our community so far this year, some of which is highlighted above. In addition to these activities, our Rotarians were able to deliver many meals and empathy to seniors with SOS Meals on Wheels and provide grants to Faces of Hope in Guatemala and Educate to Envision in Honduras.

At the Rotary District level, District Governor Hung Wei is inviting all of us to attend a District Mid-Year Reflection Meeting on Saturday, January 13th. Visit the calendar to learn more.

Finally, remember to pray for the children and vulnerable global community members who hope for peace, well-being, and happiness in the new year.

Cheers,

Ed Hernandez

We will kick off our annual grant program this month. We have approximately 25k to grant to local non-profit organizations serving San Leandro residents. Stay tuned for more information and the opportunity to volunteer for the grantmaking committee.

The following are opportunities available in our community. While not Rotary-specific events, they offer a great way to get involved locally:

Here are the details:
When: 2nd and 4th Monday of the month, 8 – 11 am

Project Literacy – San Leandro Library

Project Literacy is an adult and family literacy program. The program helps adults improve their basic reading and writing skills to live more fulfilling lives. Project Literacy offers in-person and online tutoring opportunities.

Project Literacy seeks volunteer literacy tutors year-round and holds tutor training opportunities throughout the year. See link for more information and to find out about the next tutor training opportunity.

We could volunteer for some of these together for even more fun!
